Bears Trounce Chowan Hawks 68-13

Durham, NC – (October 18, 2008) Homecoming 2008 is truly one that will be remembered as the Bears of Shaw University trounced Chowan University 68-13. Right out the gate with 13:10 on the clock in the first quarter, Julius Gregory scored on a sixteen yard pass from Travis Robinson. The PAT by Caleb Reid was good and the Bears quickly went up 7-0. Senior Day for the thirteen senior members of the team was off to an incredible start. Senior Lenell King ran a sixty-one yard pass from Robinson with 7:47 ticking away and Reid kicked the extra point sending the Bears up 14-0. Deandre Okanji ran away with an 82 yard pass from Robinson and Reid iced the play with the extra point and Shaw was up 21-0 at the close of the first quarter. Into the second quarter, Robinson scored on a one yard run and Reid kicked the extra point for a new score of 28-0. Lincoln Shepherd kicked a 39 yard field goal at the 5:29 mark for 7 plays, 22 yards and the score continued to mount for the Bears 31-0. CJ Westler answered back with a three yard run at the 2:13 mark and Cory Cline kicked the extra point and Chowan was on the scoreboard 31-7. With just nine seconds left in the first half, Reid kicked a 23 yard field goal and the first half ended with the Bears ahead 34-7. The second half began and Raymond Williams received the ball with 14:48 on the board and ran 86 yards for the touchdown. Reid kicked the PAT and the Bears went up 40-7. Williams continued his great performance with a 47 yard run for the touchdown and Reid kicked the extra point. With the Bears now ahead 47-7, Chowan answered with a three yard touchdown from Ryan Bouldin. Cline attempted the extra point but it was blocked. This was Chowan’s last score of the game with the Bears ahead 47-13. Tyrone Bolden scored on a 25 yard pass from Robinson with 5:07 left in the third quarter and Reid scored the extra point and the Bears marched on 54-13. In the last quarter of the game Charles Rhinehart scored on a five yard pass from Robinson and Reid kicked the PAT. The Bears were up 61-13. The final play of the game came as James Pettway scored on a 14 yard pass from Julius with 1:39 left. Reid scored on the extra point and the Bears finished the game 68-13 over Chowan University. Shaw’s total offense showed an impressive 653 yards and 198 rushing. The Bears posted 455 passing yards with Robinson throwing 368 with five touchdown passes. On the receiving end, Okanji tallied 144 yards; the longest as 82 yards that led the the touchdown. With only one fumble, the Bears kept mistakes to a minimum and Williams rushed for 139 of the 231. The defense was equally dominant. Senior Gerard Jones scored nine tackles for the game with 6 solo and three assisted. Senior Louis Ellis made seven tackles and Senior Monte Coleman and James Duplessis both tallied six each for the game. Senior Liddon Levine made four tackles. Head Coach Darrell Asberry stated, “We are playing each game one at a time. Tonight’s win was great for us but we are focusing on the task at hand; one game at a time.” Raymond Williams stated, “We don’t take any of our opponents for granted and we are playing one at a time.” The Bears were simply impressive on the gridiron and the seniors played their last home game in big style. Congratulations to our super thirteen members that include Louis Herring, Robert Lewis, Tommy Campbell, Martellus Braxton, Jarrid Coaxum, Adrian Bredell, Brandon Roberts, Oliver Pazdry, Liddon Levine, Lenell King, Gerard Jones, Louis Ellis and Monte Coleman. Asberry stated to them, “We love you and we thank your families for allowing us to come into your homes.”
