Dormitory check out is approaching, forcing residents to have their belongings packed and ready to go by 5 p.m. Dec. 13, according to residence hall officials.
“All residence’s keys have to be turned in before they leave for the holidays,” said Laura Aker, Newsome residence hall manager.
“I stay off campus but I normally hang out and watch TV in the dorm, so I am kind of upset no one is going to be here over the holidays. I will be in North Carolina over the break with no where to go, so I’ll probably be eating fast food the majority of the time,” said Shaw student Laquinda Suell. According to school officials, personal items will be not be allowed in the rooms without the proper documentation being signed.
“Not only must keys be turned in but a property agreement must be signed in order to keep your belongings inside your room over the break,” said Bromeley Thornton, Fleming Kee residence hall manager. “This is my home away from home. I have a job that requires me to be there 40 hours a week, I can not just jump up and go back to Georgia when there is a holiday break and I can’t stay on campus. I don’t think it’s fair, so now I have to stay with one of my friends for the holidays,” said Ali Jones. “I don’t mind being kicked off campus for a while. I am ready to go back home to Wilmington to see my family for the holidays. I’ll see Shaw University in January,” said Daniel Kelly. New students can come back January 10. Returning students may move in a day later, according to school officials.
“They can arrive as early as they can get here on their designated day,” said Aker.
