Too Many Women at Shaw University?

According to Shaw University’s website 64.37% of there student body are women.

“I seemed to notice that women out number us a lot, but I like it. Just more options for me”, according to sophomore Akeem Stanley. He is just one of many out numbered young men on campus.Jerrica Johnson a junior at Shaw University said,”you know I never noticed, but now it makes sense. It seems like you always see the same guys, but I seem to encounter a different girl every day.”

According to Gary Hines, Admissions Counselor and Recruiter at Shaw University, “we have approximately 2,669 students enrolled and of that 1,728 are female students. And of 723 new freshmen 462 of them are also females.”

“Black colleges and universities always tend to have more female students, unless it’s a big sport’s school or all male, either way women tend to have more numbers”, stated Venice Jackson one of the admissions’ office managers.

“If you took away the sports programs I think the number would be even larger. Men tend to take other routes after high school. Women seem to flock to college now a days”, according to William Montaque head track and field coach at the university.

So where are all the men? Some may ask.

Rakesha Toomer a junior at Shaw had to say that, “I don’t believe all black men are locked up. Their just not here. I mean the prison system and the universities are neck and neck for enrollment.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statics, at year end of 2007 there were 3,138 black male sentenced prisoners per 100,000 black males in the U.S. All were between the ages of 18-24 years of age.

This may explain why the women out number the men at Shaw University.
