The lineup of contestants included Eric Pitts, Tyrell Vines, Joshua Cozart, Abdul Barber, Malik Devoy-Herring, and Quentin Powell. The judges panel included Miss Shaw University, Tyisha Wills, Paul Vandergrift, Devin Baker and Jacqueline Chance.

Speaking in his capacity was current SGA President, and former Mr. Alpha Rho, Andrew Cann. “It was an honor serving Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated for the 2009-2010 school year,” said Cann. Cann boasted on how Delta Sigma Theta was an elite group of women who serve the community as well as the Shaw University Community. “I expect the next Mr. Alpha Rho to be humble and to serve the illustrious women of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated to the best of his ability,” said Cann.

To open up the pageant, contestants presented the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated, the audience, and judges with a quote that they apply to their everyday life. This was each individual contestants’ first opportunity to convince the crowd that he was capable of being crowned Mr. Alpha Rho.

“I do not know the key to success, but I know the key to failure is trying to please everyone,” was Malik Herring’s quote.

Herring also excelled in The “Express Yourself” segment of the pageant. “This segment gave the competing young men and I the opportunity to entertain the audience with a talent. I was focused on winning the hearts of the judges,” said Herring. Herring read a poem entitled, “Take My Hand”, which he specially dedicated to the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta.

To conclude the competition part of the ceremony, President of the Alpha Rho chapter, Elisa Wiah, had Herring and the other contestants randomly choose a question from the questionnaire jar. Herring, presented Wiah with red roses as he was asked to comment on what issues he noticed here on campus.

Herring’s response was, “lack of communication is our biggest problem. We should not just come together for a pageant. We are the first HBCU on the south! We should always stick together!”

The pageant concluded with the crowning of Malik Herring, 2010-2011 Mr. Alpha Rho.
