At Shaw University, Greek Life can be seen as an important piece of the University’s social activities and traditions. Amongst the fraternities and sororities known as “The Divine Nine,” there are currently 45 young men and women representing the Shaw University Chapters of these historic organizations, and these students are all very active not only in the Shaw Community, but the Raleigh Community as well.
” We Greeks show a lot of unity here at Shaw University. Even though we represent different organizations, we take pride in being unified when it comes to doing community services,” said Senior Elementary Education major Louise Odom. Louise is one of two active Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members remaining at Shaw. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the sister chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the oldest of ” The Divine Nine.” Currently, this chapter holds the most members in one Greek organization at Shaw University, which is twelve.
Recently, these twelve young men, along with remaining eight members of Kappa Alpha Psi, have been assigned classrooms at Hope Elementary here in Raleigh. Every Monday, you will find one of these outstanding young men reading books to these elementary students. ” It means a lot to those children when they see college student come and spend time with them. They are our future, and we like to set precedents for them to want to achieve, not to mention they are well-worth the time we miss from Shaw’s classes,” commented Senior Criminal Justice Major, and Kappa Man Marcus Brooks.
The Divine Nine organizations, which have been around since 1906, were established to promote camaraderie and academic excellence for its members and service to the communities they serve. The members of the Divine Nine at Shaw University show their passion for carrying out this task through their works.
