On Saturday, Shaw University student and local rapper Jessica Davis, better known as Jey Davis, performed at the Fall Fashion Show held at Kmart off Blue Ridge Rd. here in Raleigh. This was the first fashion show event held at this particular Kmart, where local models showcased different shoes and apparel sold at the store. The show was sponsored by Kmart, R Citi Modeling Agency, and Dollface Entertainment along with Rockstar energy drink.
Jey Davis said a good friend who works at Kmart helped opened the doors to this opportunity by putting in a good word for her. She immediately accepted the offer to perform at this event, “I rarely turn down performances, I looked at it as practice,” said Davis.
Davis said she was nervous because this performance was a challenge for her. “Being able to catch someones attention while they are pushing a buggie, buying groceries, had me sweating bullets,” said Jey Davis. She said also performing before a more diverse crowd, such as different age and ethnic groups, presented another challenge for her. “I had to figure out how I could incorporate a show that would get everybody involved,” she said. Jey Davis said her performance shocked a lot of people because most people have never heard a female artist rap the way she did.
The Kmart fashion show isn’t all Jey Davis is involved with. She is busy working on headlining her own concert while steadily working on her music. Davis’ current mixtape RAPERTOIRE can be downloaded on DATPIFF.COM. She hopes to release another mixtape or an album by next year. “I have put in extra time and hard work, hopefully it all pays off,” said Davis.
