50th Class Reunion Breakfast

Homecoming 2010 breakfast was in honor of the 50th reunion of the class of 1960.

The student government association class president opened up the breakfast, speaking on the 60s. She reminded them of how SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was started on this campus; as well in the 60s the Peace Core was organized.

Before stepping down, she encouraged the class of 1960, to give back to the university. Stating that, alumni have to have ongoing support. “We are a legacy of social justice and activism. We are building this boat and sailing at the same time,” she said.

Amongst the laughter and smiling faces was Beasley Dixon, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. Dixon said it felt good as well as excited to be at Shaw University again. “My fondest memories of Shaw were the football and basketball games, my classes, and I really enjoyed my student teaching,” said Dixon.

Barbara Philips graduated from Shaw University with Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education, cracked a joke saying it was about time the university had a female president. “The fact that it is the oldest institution is one of the reasons that make it so great. And that so many outstanding people graduated from here,” said Philips.

Alumni often share words of encouragement and advice about life for upcoming students. Taking her time to think of good words to share, Dixon said, “Do all that you can do, work hard and don’t give up.” Philips wants students to learn everything and as much as they can learn. “Remember who you are and whos you are, and always trust in God for guidance.”
