Students Looking for Change in January

As Shaw students pack up and head home for the holidays, many students said they are hoping to return in January seeing some new changes.

Quita Davis said, “It is time for a change in the dorms, and everything else such as better residence life.”

Davis and others said they are hoping the student protests in early December will get results.

“The students are still upset about the situations, but it has been presented to the Board of Trustees and to the administration,” said SGA President Shaunte Brown.

According to Brown, there are no immediate plans for more protests. “We have moved towards action planning and making sure the university follows up on the promises they made to students,” said Brown.

The SGA said its hoping work will be done over the winter break to residence halls including all structural, electrical and cosmetic improvements.

Brown said Shaw officials will likely communicate with students about all changes and upgrades soon.

SGA and protest leaders said they will do an extensive walk through of the residence halls to make sure that they are up to standards set-forth by the students and to encourage a sense of community.

The Student Government and other leaders said they will be sponsoring an initiative to address a campus make-over in January.

“We will be inviting the entire Shaw community to help rebuild our university as much as we possibly can,” said Brown.
