Academically Correct

Dr. Marilyn Sutton-Haywood is the new vice president of academic affairs. She has previously held this position at both Bethune-Cookman University as well as Johnson C. Smith.

Prior to, she was an assistant professor of biology and mathematics at Belmont Abbey College and as an assistant professor in the Natural Science and Allied Health Department at Kennesaw State University.

Dr. Haywood responsibilities at Shaw University consist of: Managing the processes through which teaching is conducted and administered, insuring that the curriculum appropriately reflects the mission of the campus and that it is as current as possible in terms of disciplines and delivery.

Dr. Haywood also has to work closely with the president of the university, division chairs, the vice president of administration, as well as the executive director of human resources.

She plans to pull information from a variety of departments to put together a report for the accreditation review in 2012 that will prove that Shaw University is adhering to their academic requirements.

“The whole accreditation thing is about looking at what you’re doing and making the correct changes to improve. What we are trying to do is look at where Shaw is, evaluate it and make it even better,” Haywood said.

College and university’s accreditation is a consistent review of the education programs offered to students.

Along with her departmental duties she is also teaching a freshman studies class. “I am a faculty member first, but my heart is always in the classroom,” Haywood said.

Not every one has received the opportunity of meeting Dr. Haywood. “I have only heard a few things about her, but I can’t wait to see what new ideas she has to better the university,” said junior Psychology major, Ralynne Simpson.

Some student’s think that academics are essential and should be taken serious noting “Dr. Haywood is doing a good job assuring that our academic excellance is achieved,” said senior criminal justice major, Maurice Young.
