Return To Tradition
After more than a year without a traditional on campus Summer School, many wondered if traditional summer school would ever return to the University. In an effort to make summer school more accessible for students Shaw University broke tradition last year and offered summer school courses online only for the first time. This summer the University, is offering one hundred and sixty seven classes, compared to only thirty seven classes last semester according to Associate Vice President of Academic Quality and Interim Registrar Dr. Courtney Lamar.
However, the return to traditional summer school on the campus has not been without frustrations according to Junior Social Work major, Pyulette McIntosh. McIntosh expressed frustration over getting information about registering for summer school classes. Agnes Baxter Director of Residence Life and Judicial Services said that” there would be fewer frustrations if the majority of the students completed their course registration online in April, and completed all necessary financial obligations prior to returning to campus. The University did not anticipate any problems transitioning from all online classes back to traditional summer school classes on campus, and was prepared to accommodate all students regardless of when they returned to campus.”
Students were welcomed back to a smoother clearance process according to Student Accounts Coordinator Joanne Davis. Some summer school students were left wondering if their class will be canceled due to small class size, and location. However, the University’s Summer School Session has solid attendance with over six hundred students registered for class, in contrast to only two hundred students who participated last year according to Lamar.
The University summer school session is currently in progress and runs through July 2nd. The University will not be offering a second session of summer school classes, according to the University Website.
