Graduating Class Finding a Job In Their Major….Might Be Unlikely

There is a high probability that most students graduating this year will not be getting jobs in their major. A major part to the problem is that students are not locating the proper avenues in finding that silver lining to the career of their dreams. According to Ms. Holly who last year was the director of Career and Development states that a guesstimated amount of 20% of students who graduated last year pursued a career in their major. According to a survey given to the class of 2006, only 15% of the students utilized the Career Center. According to Mr. Cumberbatch who is currently the Director of Institutional Research “the survey is given a year after students have graduated. Most of the time it is hard to locate students to complete the surveys and to give and accurate reading as to what jobs they have gone on to pursue.” The 2006 survey was a survey taken by only 12% of the 2006 class. But, one thing that can be assured is the students still lack in utilizing the Career Center. Dr. Uzzell who is the director of Experiential Learning and Career Services program states that her objective at Shaw University is to introduce all the students to a variety of various careers as well as help students with career plans and job seeking assistance. The new program now allows students to engage in student career assessments, self assessments, resume writing classes, cover letter writing, internships, Co-op, community and all other add-ons you might need for a solidified portfolio. Dr. Uzzell stated that the reason she picked Shaw University over the many other schools is because and I quote ” Shaw University has a rich background and history”. Also being that the career service and experiential department hadn’t been developed in a while Dr.Uzell embraced the opportunity headfirst. To kick off her program she held a resume and cover letter clinic on (Accurate Date). The career center has always been around the campus and only a handful of students take advantage of the opportunity. With the 2009 graduation class getting ready to prepare for the real world it is something that most students should take into consideration. Dr. Uzzell will be holding a job Career next month as well as other career meetings in where she will invite people to come speak at the school offering internships as well as job connects. Dr. Uzzell can also be reached in her office, which is located in the TOS women’s dorm as well email at Kuzzell@shawu.edu.
