Durham, NC – (September 20, 2008) In their home opener, the Shaw Bears showed no signs of fatigue from weeks of travel on the road. The Bears easily defeated Lincoln University 56-7 at Durham County Memorial Stadium before 3000 excited and cheering fans.
In his first start this season, quarterback Travis Robinson wasted no time in hitting Lenell King with an eight yard pass for the first touchdown of the game with 5:02 in the first quarter. Caleb Reid kicked the extra point and the Bears were on the scoreboard 7-0. Lincoln went three and out on the next play and with 3:17 left, Robinson threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Okanji.
In the second quarter, Johnny Wooten scored on a two yard run sending Shaw further ahead 21-0 at the end of the first half. With the start of the second half underway, Raymond Williams scored on a four yard run and Reid hit the extra point sending the score up 28-0. 10:15 into the third quarter, King scored on a 20 yard touchdown pass from Robinson. Lincoln University got the ball and couldn’t produce. Shaw got the ball and Robinson fumbled and Lincoln recovered the ball, scoring on a six yard play from Kareem Dennis. Michael Marchand kicked the extra point and Lincoln got on the scoreboard for the first time in the game.
Lincoln then kicked off to Shaw and Williams received the ball on the 15 yard line and ran 85 yards for a touchdown. His celebration in the endzone caused a penalty after the touchdown but the return was still counted and the Bears went up 42-7. With 1:45 left in the third quarter, Robinson hit Okanji for a 58 yard touchdown and the extra point was good by Reid. 10:48 into the fourth quarter, Gary Moise scored on a three yard run and Reid kicked the extra point for the final score of 56-7.
Following the game at centerfield, Darrell Asberry, Head Coach stated, “We played well but we have to make sure that we eliminate turnovers and penalties. The road to the championship has to come through Durham, North Carolina.”
The Bears will take on Bowie State University on Saturday, September 27th at 4:00 p.m. at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
