It’s History

I never thought this day would come, a day when we as Americans changed the world and made a difference. In Will I Am song Yes We Can he said “We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.” As soon as we knew that Barack Obama won as the new Elected President of the United States, everyone cheered, there were Blacks, Whites, Latinos, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, Islanders, Italians and et cetera everywhere rejoicing because it’s a new day. While standing at the Bell Tower on Hillsborough St. at North Carolina State University people would just scream his name. Even though it did get a little out of hand and Raleigh Police had to come and maintain us, make sure no one got hurt, and stayed safe; you could see in the officer’s eyes that they were excited as well, but seeing they were on duty they had to be professional so I can not knock them for that. From Hillsborough Street to the main campus of NC State all you could hear was “Obama, Obama, Obama” and yes there were a few others (The Mac Supporters) who were saying there own thing that’s not to appropriate for me to say. I remember calling my mother to hear how she was doing and she was just crying (she gets really emotional) saying “We did it” she explained that she thought she would never see this day come and for my father who was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina was happy and thankful but did not quite say it (He’s a very proud man). All I could think about was the bigotry and prejudice that he went through when he was a child that I knew he was happy that we finally have a person of color in the white house. I am going to call my Grandmother today on my father’s side that is ninety eight years old and counting to hear her reaction because she has been there, she has seen it and when she was finally given a opportunity to vote for the first time, she never missed another chance. The other night when I called her just before the Election, I asked her how she was doing she said “I am doing alright, just thanking the lord for letting me see another day”, put a smile on my face because I knew he would let her see this day come. I know she is thankful and grateful to see this day come and so am I.
