Susan Vashon Paul and her Impact in the Civil War
Susan Paul Vashon was a woman who was very passionate about her life. Her father George Vashon was an activist for African American slaves in the south.
Her father did a lot Help slaves and make sure they were able to find jobs in the north after slavery. She worked along her father in Boston for awhile helping slaves and being very active with the Underground Railroad along with Harriet Tubman. When her father passed away, she wanted to continue to follow in her father's footsteps in doing his work.
Once she was married to her husband they both participated in the Underground Railroad where cared and took in many slaves. She decided to do much more by being involved with the Civil War where not only African American men were having a hard time for their country but also African American women. Susan decided that she wanted to become a Civil War relief organizer.
She would organize places for slaves to live and work after they got out of the Civil War. She also played the role as a nurse in the Civil War by taking care of many wounded soldiers in the war. When the war was over she knew she still wanted to help t he African American educator by becoming an educator and helping thousands of children receive and education in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
